The Portuguese Taxpayer Number, or NIF, will come very handy, or rather essential. Having a NIF number allows you to open bank accounts, lease/purchase properties, it’s a step towards access to National Health System and more.

Portuguese banks are now offering 'temporary NIFs'. Nevertheless, you’ll always end up in need of a permanent NIF number.

You may acquire a NIF number from wherever you are! Since you are not a resident in the country yet, you'll need a citizen/resident to apply in your behalf, taking on the temporary role of Fiscal Representative

Documents required:

Valid passport

Proof of address outside of Portugal
